Serving our youth with emphasis on Safety, Fun, Skill and Camaraderie.
Youth sailing programs offered in partnership by Lake Murray Sailing Association (LMSA) and Lake Murray Sailing Club (LMSC) focus on development of young sailors from 10 years through high school. Many of our participating youth begin with the LMSC/LMSA annual Youth sailing Certification Clinic. Normally operating from mid June to early August, Certification Clinic instruction begins with the basics following the US Sailing Learn Sailing Right course outline. Students need no prior knowledge of sailing and can learn in a low intensity, fun filled environment.
Youth Camp instructors operate under the supervision of the Camp Director who is certified by the United States Sailing Association (US Sailing) including power boat safety and rescue training. The Camp Director is also certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED procedures. Instructors teach students sailing skills in our fleet of Flying Juniors (FJ’s), a design used in high school and collegiate competition.
Youth camp graduates and youth sailors who have mastered essential sailing skills will have the opportunity to continue sailing in the LMSC/LMSA Advanced Sailing and Racing Teams including Top Gun Sailing School. LMSC and LMSA sponsor these programs to introduce young people into the sport of sailing. Using the LMSA/LMSA instructional approach, sailing is a premiere learning platform helping our youth to become self reliant, develop leadership skills, and promote a sense of personal responsibility.
Sailing is a lifetime activity.
Young sailors can reasonably expect to enjoy the sport into their seventies and beyond. We hope this program will open the eyes of our youth to the fun, excitement, and individual accomplishment the sport offers and help them appreciate the great local resource represented by Lake Murray. If you have questions or need additional information about the program, you may call Allan Gowans at 803-240-4333 or email LMSailASSOC@aol.com
The Lake Murray Sailing Club was founded in 1969. Situated on 11 acres on a large cove with a modern clubhouse complimenting the rural character of the area, the grounds include a large, grassy lakefront for picnicking and a swimming area. More than 100 families hold membership in the club. Sailing interests range from casual cruising to very competitive racing.
LMSC promotes sailing through an active racing schedule and offers training for men, women, teens, and kids. The club, partnered with the Lake Murray Sailing Association (LMSA) charitable foundation, sponsors community-wide “Learn to Sail” programs for adult novices just entering sailing and community based youth sailing programs. Our Introduction to Sailing, Learn Sailing Right, Youth Sailing Certification Clinic and year round Youth Sailing are four such programs.
